Ubuntu has saved the day once again for Archon digital. A few days ago, I installed a few apps to clean up potential malware on one of my PCs as I started to experience persistent crashes in Windows XP. All the malware got removed but in the process I accidentally corrupted my Windows installation.

I needed that Windows box to work right away as the NTFS hard drives still contain most of my recent and ongoing work. Using Adobe applications on Ubuntu still needs a lot of more improvement and official support which is the major reason why I still switch back and forth between Ubuntu and Windows XP when working.

Hardy Heron read the NTFS partition without any problems so I was able to back up everything I needed before I re-partitioned my NTFS hard drive, threw in some 2GB of RAM and re-installed Windows XP Pro using a special unattended Windows XP Pro installation compiled using nlite.

After all that I was glad to see that I now have a stripped-down XP Pro installation with my Adobe applications.

“Ubuntu Saves the Day – Windows XP Crashes Yet Again”

  1. I always keep multiple live cd’s laying around for just such an emergency. Also, sfc /scannow will check for corrupt system files, though it’s usually broken in TinyXP and similar versions.

  2. @nukeit: i keep my Ubuntu on a separate hard drive in a multiple boot configuration.

  3. I’m still waiting on the 4TB NAS setups to drop… I keep meaning to back up all my crap, but it’s not that simple when all your data is spread across 8 disks in various RAID setups in multiple systems… Fortunatly, my drives are corporate grade, and seem to be fairly stable (knock on wood)

  4. I also crave for one of those 4TB machines.

My backups at home are a mess only I can decipher.

Sadly, my home setup doesn’t have enterprise level hard drives but still I make my backup storage redundant.

We use a good digital asset management software at work and I’d love to setup one at home when I get a bigger NAS.

  5. My guys at the office have been learning ubuntu quite well. I will be switching to ubuntu and replace my windows vista that’s pre-loaded with my notebook soon.

    vista really sucks

  6. @bloggista: I’m glad to see Ubuntu working well for you.

Can I ask what your main day-to-day applications are? Have you made your guys port over some applications to Ubuntu from Windows?
