Archon Digital joined Entrecard around this time of the year almost exactly two years back on December 2007 on Yaw-Yan ArDigma first as an experiment to how effective the new blog network is compared to Blogrush. You first get the initial feeling of awe of suddenly getting so much traffic and meeting new people which at that time the experience was something new and exciting. Genuine bloggers went widget surfing to find other bloggers and soon got the feel of it and started to enjoy the newfound community of like-minded people.
Then in droves came the spam bots, the schemers, the whiners and the cheaters. Factor in the inability of the owner to responsibly take control and put direction to the entire effort and you got yourself a recipe for failure. Like the absentee landlord that Al Pacino refers too in the movie Devil’s Advocate, the owner never really became a real part of the community but instead it was the volunteer mods and the lead developer who kept the community running all this time.
And yes, with that I would have to admit that Entrecard is a failure.
Though it still functions to this day and it still is a benefit to new blogs and for some to meet new people but it is far from its original goal, whatever that original goal was. What is now left of a once vibrant community are blogs dropping on each other just for the sake of earning credits and some just for the sake of keeping the widget like what I was doing until now. The people who acquired it from the owner even took off the forums which was the only thing keeping the community sort of alive and intact.
I have never been critical of Entrecard in the sense that I never publicly complained on as to what is wrong on their system. There are plenty of people who have covered this subject far too much and for far too long now and what I would have to say would then be just redundant and insignificant.
From that period of time starting December 2007 to July of 2008 I was an active member and dropper. The last Top Ten Entrecard post I did was on July 2008 which was around the same time I got to think I would no longer actively drop but instead would just drop back to whoever drops on me and keep the interaction real. I made an effort to reduce bounce rates on others by clicking on an internal link as soon as I finished dropping and even tried to come up with a nice campaign for it.
Though I did not hide my disgust for the things I found to be just plain wrong and unprofessional during the time, I kept silent and chose not to publicly criticize and ridicule hoping that as a community it would correct itself and regain what it has lost. And so I lost touch and lost interest altogether and even came to a point where I would set my theme to display Entrecard’s widget using conditional tags in PHP so that the widget would only appear on a particular page I wanted it to show. I would soon find out the obvious and my bounce rate improved dramatically after I stopped actively dropping and returning drops since middle of 2008.
Let me also say that I am grateful that I was also one of the fortunate ones to have been able to cash out the majority of my credits before the site was “acquired”. But just recently there is this new directive that you can pay them a certain annual fee so as to keep your widget free from paid ads. I’d say screw me if I’d have to pay someone fifty bucks a year just so they can stop advertising on my property.
On top of that there was the need to reduce the number of widgets and scripts used to keep Archon Digital as light as possible. The obvious choice was of course to remove the least performing of them all.
I still have a lot of friends on the network and so I kept one last Entrecard account on one blogger blog which I rarely update so I can still contribute to friends’ blogs by way of dropping on them only when I get a chance. There is still a few thousand credits left on that last account, a combination of the earnings from all the other accounts I closed down. Hopefully I will find something useful for them in the marketplace.
It was an interestingly unique yet bumpy ride dropping for the past two years but as for this site Archon Digital, Entrecard has been finally dropped.

I tried Entrecard on my very first blog and I found I had way too many hit and run visitors rather than the active readers that bloggers really want. This prompted me to remove it in little over a month.
Thanks for sharing your experience with Entrecard.

I was there a few weeks after it started if I’m right, I felt I was part of something.
It took me so long to actually remove it even if I realized it wasn’t going to be of benefit in the long run.

I am thinking to leave it now. After Graham left, the new owner doesn’t seem to be interested to be engaged in the community or at least make Entrecard a great community like it used to be
I have to find a way to flush my 150,000 EC though

Good thing I was able to cash out when given the chance. I once had multiple accounts on Entrecard and been deleting them silently one-by-one until the last three of which I deleted this one and the Yaw Yan account. There is one more account on a different blog left and I intend to keep it for awhile until I either spend all the credits left or if the network dies a natural death.

I was about to, but then they dropped the price to $1 for 1000 EC, which is totally not worth it!
And now, they took out the whole selling capabilities altogether

I had a feeling that was the last time they would offer to buy back credits so I cashed out.

I use my ECs at the moment just for some cheap advertising campaigns and to support some contests which produce nice backlinks (i think it’s the best and efficient way to get rid of ECs without spending much time)

I agree 100%, luckily I only took a couple of months with my first blog to realize it was a big waste of time, along with many other “traffic” networks that really never did anything for me.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting too!

Those who left on early and concentrated on improving their blogs with great content and with building a dynamic community of like-minded bloggers made the wisest choice.

I myself have been using Entrecard for 14 months on all of my blogs and see less and less benefit each month. The marketplace used to be valuable for a short time, but now is filled with nothing but stale entries. I only get around 200 visits per month from Entrecard anymore, so the traffic is negligable. Yet, I leave it just to advertise my badge on other sites, I don’t drop more than 5 to 10 EC’s per day though.

Well even the Market is placed with entries that are no longer being managed. So many junks in there that you don’t know which works and which doesn’t

and the drop-and-run traffic is not really the traffic we’d like to get…
I used to think that at least it adds up, but factor in the bounce rate and the lack of interaction from other droppers, then spending too much time on Entrecard is definitely not worth it.

@Michael Aulia btw, if you have credits to share, I would be happy to take some before you dump entrecard

I applaud you Archon on breaking free from EC! Like you, I started cashing in my credits as soon as the program was announced. I suspected it would not be sustainable, and it really went downhill once the new owners took control. Once they completely shut down comments and the forum (probably because they didn’t want to listen to people complain), I quietly took down the widget. EC used to be a good place to meet other bloggers; now, I won’t touch that site.

Too bad the new owners don’t seem to have a solid plan to build their community and leverage on their numbers.

I left Entrecard a few months ago, having been with it for close to two years too. I had accumulated a nice pile of credits between three blogs, and I intended to leave the main account open for awhile to see if I would change my mind and go back. I didn’t have the chance. Within a day, my account was deleted and all those credits were lost without warning. Now that I read what you’ve put here, I see the negative changes keep happening and the worth of Entrecard severely diminishing. I won’t change my mind now. I’m gone.

They just deleted your account? That’s too bad, all those credits are yours hard-earned and they shouldn’t have done something like that.
Never saw any active Entrecard admins since the acquisition, maybe they are just probably giving the network a slow and painful death.

You make some good points, perhaps i really should consider only dropping back on the members who drop on me or who stumbled from the Campaign’s list on my blog. At the moment i just look for members who reciprocate, so that my time is not that much wasted while dropping 300 cards for several blogs.
Until i find a better way to get traffic to my blog or increased my SERP in Google to get more organic traffic which is more targeted, i will stick with EntreCard

Entrecard traffic is more like artificial traffic. Try not dropping for a few days and you’ll see what I mean. It can work to your advantage for a while, getting enough page views to eventually get you noticed and you’ll also meet people in the network who you would become friends with, but sooner or later you’ll see for yourself that search engine traffic and other social networking activities will benefit you more.

I have to admit that is something that I had felt about Entrecard myself. I was on Entrecard the few weeks it had started and it was fun at first because the people were genuine and you could feel the sharing and community spirit going around. But as the months came and progressed it started loosing its spirit.
To this date I only keep entrecard as means to keep in touch with fellow bloggers that I have connected with from the beginning of entrecard. Luckily I was also able to cash out on the credits though I still felt a bit cheated in the end.
I thought and was hoping for a long time that there would be something great about Entrecard. Now I dont even bother much. But like you said it is a good tool for new bloggers, however if you rely too much on it, it could be a negative thing for anyone’s blog with the ballooning of bounce rates of people that meerly hit and run.

Wow, I’m certainly glad I missed out the this EntreCard failure. The first time I heard about them was from a post about StumbleUpon and how one of the commentators warned about being banned like the members of EntreCard. So my initial contact was on a bad note.
I see that the forum was removed and I assume that this is really not something that people can sign up for anymore.
Thanks for the heads-up and all of the details.

I rarely did drops since April 2008 and but kept the widget until December 2009.
It was just after I realized I have a dozen more rewarding things to do.
