Mock battles. Intramuros, Manila

The old walled city of Intramuros, I’d remember myself as a kid let loose on its walls and ruins, reenacting countless sieges and mock battles. It was the 80’s after all, a time without such distractions as the Internet and Social Media, when playing outdoors was part of every kid’s daily routine.

I remember a time in the early 90’s when the whole place was full of excavations and when restoration works were ongoing. We’d make up stories of great treasure being dug up but all we’d actually see were PLDT service trucks and their Zero backlog signs.

Now that I’m an adult, I can’t really run around and play mock battles without drawing much attention, so I take photos instead. At least when my imagination runs wild I can just pretend I’m taking a photo from a weird angle. My photography tends to take me to places that remind me of those moments in my childhood, just random places, around the streets of Manila. Intramuros is one of these special places.
